Chapter 6

Marcus and Kayla had agreed to meet up at the White Castles at the intersection of Keystone Avenue and 38th Street. Marcus knew the neighborhood well, almost too well. He was somewhat glad that his mother was taking him over to this area to meet with Kayla in the morning rather than late afternoon or night. The last thing he wanted to happen right now was for people to see him, especially since he was meeting with Kayla.

The feeling of guilt grew so much inside of Marcus that it almost began to make him sick. Not only could he believe how much Kayla’s life was in danger when his apartment got shot up, but now she was practically hiding from the very nigga that was after Marcus. Furthermore, Marcus was practically torn on what seemed like the long ride across the east side on 38th Street. While his eyes could not help but to scan the faces of niggas walking up and down the street, or coming out of strip malls that they drove by, his mind was wondering what exactly would be Kayla’s reaction to him. Since dropping him off at his mother’s house just last night, which seemed so long ago at this point, her life had changed so much. Her mother, brother, and sister had been held hostage by a couple of niggas with guns. Marcus knew that he did not know what something like that felt like, so he would need to be extra cautious when it came to meeting with Kayla inside of the White Castles restaurant.

Lorna must have been reading her son’s mind at that very moment. After what had been several long minutes of them driving down East 38th Street, Lorna broke the silence.

“What’s on your mind, Marcus?” she asked. “You thinking about what you’re going to say when you see Kayla?”

Marcus looked at his mother. He hated how there were moments he felt like she could really read his mind. And this was turning out to be one of those moments.

“How you know that?” Marcus asked, turning and looking back at the street as they crossed Sherman Avenue, the last main street before they would come to Keystone a couple of miles down the street.

“Cause,” Lorna said. “I know that’s what I would be thinking.”

“I just feel helpless,” Marcus said.

Lorna instantly turned down the DMX album that she had playing in the background. She always wanted to be the kind of mother that actually listened to her child. This way, she would know what her child was thinking so she could know when she needed to talk to him – pick her battles wisely, so to speak. “Why you say that, Marcus?” Lorna asked. “What’s on your mind, son?”

“Just I feel helpless, like I said,” Marcus answered. “I got my arm in a sling and all wrapped up and stuff while some nigga – I mean dude – is out there trying to get me and my girl.”

“Well,” Lorna said, knowing that this was another one of those perfect times to teach him a valuable lesson.
